Owned by the spirits powerhouse Diageo the Lagavulin Distillery has stood tall for many years, since 1816 to be exact. The distillery itself sits in the village of Lagavulin on the south side of the island Islay off Scotland’s West Coast. Most whisky connoisseurs name Lagavulin to be their first whisky that inspired them to follow whisky and an industry basked in mystery and wonder.

The name Lagavulin is an anglicisation of Lag a’ Mhuilinn, the Scottish Gaelic for hollow of the mill.

The yearly Lagavulin special release is always sought after and more often than not this release is the pick of the whiskies for the year. This year is no exception, classic Islay laga smoke combined with delicious fruits, sea salt and cured meats. A combination made in heaven.

The theme of this years Diageo Special Releases is ‘Rare By Nature’, how fitting this bottling is to the release name..

Tasting Notes

Nose: Creamy smoked butter, bonfires on a cold evening beside the turbulent sea air.  Apple pie stewed apples, wrapped in freshly made pastry and baked. Some floral notes too, newly cut lawn, barley fields.

Taste: Lemon tart with buttery pastries. Oily mouthfeel that leads to plenty of clean smoke and a little ash.

Finish: Citrus and smoke leads to sea salt and spice.
